The Expeditioner Blog
While there is no such thing as a ‘cheap’ Kimberley cruise, there’s certainly some great value to be found for those on a budget. Generally, if you’ve got your heart set on a ship accommodating fewer than 20 guests then you can expect a pretty hefty price tag, but don’t despair as there other some great small ship options available for those on a budget.
One such option is the 20 passenger Odyssey. Having been operating Kimberley adventure cruises since 1998, the owners of Odyssey Expeditions know the Kimberley coast better than most, utilising their many years of experience and local knowledge to offer a fantastic cruising experience. And, they aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty either to ensure all of their guests have a memorable time, often travelling on their cruises or at the very least making sure they meet every guest in Broome before or after their cruise.
The purpose-built Odyssey was launched in 2006, and at 24 metres in length and drawing just 1.8 metres she is able to sneak into some of the smaller and more tidal affected waters along the Kimberley coast, along with locations unreachable by some larger vessels. But, for a ship of her small size, she is also very capable in open water. Her advanced catamaran design offers very good stability and quiet operation.
On board there is plenty of room to relax and find a quiet space all to yourself when the mood strikes. The comfortable inside dining room accommodates all guests in one sitting, and is also a great spot for lectures and presentations with the onboard experts. On the Upper Deck there’s also a spacious lounge and dining area, ideal for al fresco dining and a late afternoon sundowner. Three further outdoor viewing decks offer more space to sit back and enjoy panoramic views of the coastline.
Odyssey offers two grades of accommodation for travellers; Deluxe Double and Classic Twin cabins. The six Deluxe Doubles are located on the Main Deck and feature a walk around double bed, large windows, built in desk, personal refrigerator, vanity and personalised air conditioning. On the Lower Deck, four compact Classic Twin cabins offer the comforts of two twin beds, storage units, bar fridge and small windows.
It is important to note that none of Odyssey’s ten cabins offer a private en suite, however there are four clean and well-appointed bathrooms shared amongst the ten cabins and in all honesty there is never much of a wait for those needing to use the WC or have a refreshing shower.
A big part of any Kimberley adventure cruise is the ability to travel ashore to explore, and the Odyssey is well equipped in this regard. She travels with a unique 12-metre excursion vessel, named ‘Homer’. Homer accommodates all guests at once, offers shade protection, an onboard toilet and an easy-access ramp at the front, making beach landings a breeze.
The team at Kimberley Cruise Specialists reckon that the Odyssey offers great value for money and a fantastic Kimberley cruising experience for those who are looking for a small ship experience but without the big price tag.
