The Expeditioner Blog
In this week’s Kimberley cruising blog we’re shining a spotlight on one of our favourite Kimberley adventure cruise operators, the Great Escape. It’s easy to see why this 14-passenger catamaran is one of the most popular ways to experience the Kimberley, with sailings often sold out more than 12 months in advance.
The MV Great Escape is the brainchild of three legends of tourism in the Kimberley; Chris Tucker, Kylie Bartle and Jeremy Tucker. For over 17 years they’ve been operating some of the best small ship cruises on the Kimberley coast, and if you’ve ever had the pleasure to meet them you will immediately notice that their passion for the Kimberley - and being able to show it to travellers – is never far from the surface.
Launched in 2006, the 25-metre Great Escape is one of the smallest luxury cruise vessels in the Kimberley, which makes it easier to see and explore more of the coastline than some of the larger vessels plying the coast.
Chris, Kylie, Jeremy and their crew pride themselves on creating a truly relaxed atmosphere on board their stylish vessel, with a genuinely friendly and entertaining six-person crew committed to ensuring you have the most magical and memorable holiday experience of your life.
With seven executive staterooms, MV Great Escape caters for up to just 14 guests. Each room is fully air-conditioned and features a queen-size bed, generous private en suite, flat screen television, DVD player and personal fridge.
Three spacious Panorama Suites (15.20 sqm metres in size) are located on the mid and upper decks and offer stunning views from wrap-around picture windows. The compact Horizon Staterooms (8.80 sqm) are located on the lower deck yet still feature a walk-around queen bed and private en suite.
Travellers aboard the Great Escape also have access to the on board helicopter, which provides a thrilling aerial view of the Kimberley Coast’s enchanting wilderness on the way to the most remote Indigenous art sites, fishing spots, waterfalls, and swimming holes.
But, if simple relaxation is what you’re after, the saltwater spa on the foredeck provides a refreshing break during the warm Kimberley days and lets you lay back in style as you cruise through the Kimberley’s spectacular landscapes.
For a small ship, there’s plenty of space aboard the Great Escape to find a minute of peace and quiet to sit down with a good book. Inside, there’s a spacious, air-conditioned lounge and dining area, complemented by a spacious rear deck where meals can be enjoyed al fresco.
Cuisine plays an important part in making any holiday experience memorable, and it is no exception aboard the Great Escape. Talented chefs prepare a unique and varied daily menu of exquisite gourmet cuisine, using fresh and wholesome produce including of course the Kimberley Coast catch of the day! You will enjoy a freshly prepared breakfast, lunch, and three course evening meal, as well as morning and afternoon tea daily, and any special requests or requirements are catered to with special care and attention.
As the Great Escape is not licensed for the sale of alcohol, the Great Escape team will ensure your beverages of choice are purchased from the local Broome bottleshop and chilled in advance of your arrival on MV Great Escape. There is then no need to pay for drinks on board and you can enjoy exactly what you like to drink.
Daily shore excursions are made easy by the on board helicopter ad a fleet of aluminium tender boats. With such small passenger numbers there’s a lot of flexibility; meaning that more than one excursion can be run at once to cater to individual desires. So if one traveller wants to head out for a spot of fishing whilst the others want to inspect some Aboriginal Art that’s perfectly possible.
Knowing, living and loving the Kimberley, The Great Escape crew are passionate to share the Kimberley with their guests. Join a Great Escape cruise and you will enjoy activities including fishing, mud crabbing, historic tours, beach walks, picnics, bush walks, bonfire nights, swimming in rock pools and waterfalls, exploring indigenous art sites and so much more.
