When determining the Kimberley expedition that best suits you, you can choose a voyage from as little as four days, all the way through to two weeks. It goes without saying that the more time you put aside, the more you will be able to see and discover.
Whilst some of the shorter four night 'taster' cruises provide a great introduction to expedition cruising - and Australia's Kimberley Coast - we do recommend that you spend a minimum of eight nights cruising, as this will ensure you have sufficient time to see all the must-see highlights, plus a lot more. And, you’ll really appreciate the extra days once you slip into the cruising life, in fact you might never want to get off!
If you are short on time though don’t despair. True North offers a ‘Kimberley Snapshot' cruise of just eight days focusing on the main locations along the coast. Even on this shorter expedition you will experience Montgomery Reef, Horizontal, Mitchell and King George falls and Raft Point, but you won’t have as much time to linger and discoverer a few of the lesser known spots.
Great Escape, Kimberley Pearl and Kimberley Quest also offer week long cruises focusing in on a specific area. The seven-night Southern Quest highlights the icons between Broome and Mitchell Plateau, whilst a week-long voyage exploring the towering gorges and waterfalls of the Northern Kimberley is also on offer.
And of course there’s even shorter fishing expeditions of five to six days that focus solely on the aim of catching one of the Kimberley’s monster ‘Barras’.

The Classic RouteDarwin to Broome and v.v
Ten to 12 night cruises One of the most popular routes for some of the slightly larger ships operating on the Kimberley Coast, Darwin to Broome (and vice versa) expedition cruises include all the must-see icons of the Kimberley coast, from King George Falls in the north through to Horizontal Falls in the south.
They also offer easy access by air and lots of choice with regards to pre- and post- cruise touring. You can easily combine your voyage with one of Australia’s greatest rail journeys – The Ghan between Adelaide and Darwin – or even a short break into some of the Top End’s great national parks including Kakadu and Litchfield. |
The Comprehensive RouteBroome to Wyndham (Kununurra) and v.v
Seven to 13 night cruises Some of the smaller coastal ships operate between Broome and Wyndham and vice versa, avoiding any major open-water crossings. Travellers reach Wyndham by flying into nearby Kununurra (from Darwin with Air North) and then joining an included one hour road transfer to the port of Wyndham.
If you’re flying in to Kununurra it would be a pity not to spend some time exploring the wonders of the East Kimberley before or after your cruise. The Bungle Bungle domes of Purnululu National Park are a ‘must see’, with El Questro Station and an Ord River cruise offering further highlights. A Kimberley SnapshotBroome to Broome
Seven to eight night cruises If you’re short of time you can experience part of the coast in little over a week. One option allows you to cruise as far north as the Mitchell Plateau aboard Kimberley Quest II, before boarding a scenic flight back to Broome on the last day. This 8-day adventure focuses on the highlights of the Southern Kimberley and you can expect to see Horizontal Falls, Montgomery Reef, King Cascades, Raft Point and Mitchell Falls.
Starting and finishing from Broome is also convenient for self-drivers who are parking a vehicle whilst aboard a ship, and travellers who want to break up a longer stay at Cable Beach in Broome with some exploration further afield. |
